What it costs in duty and tax to land a generating set

Freight and unit price move constantly. The tax stack does not. This section sets out, per destination, exactly what a customs entry on a diesel generating set attracts: the tariff heading that applies, the duty rate, every levy, what each one is charged on, and the conformity certificate you need before the unit sails.

Import duty on a diesel generating set into the UAE is 5 percent of the CIF value, and VAT is a further 5 percent charged on the customs value including insurance, freight and the duty itself. Because the duty sits inside the VAT base, the two compound to about 10.25 percent of CIF on a mainland entry. Land the container in a Designated Zone such as Jebel Ali Free Zone instead and neither charge falls due while the goods stay there or leave the country again, but both become payable in full on the day the goods cross into the mainland. There is no conformity certificate to obtain: HS 8502 is not named in any UAE conformity scheme.

Import duty on a diesel generating set into Tanzania is zero. Under the East African Community Common External Tariff every subheading of HS 8502 carries a 0 percent rate, including 8502.11.00 up to 75 kVA and 8502.12.00 above 75 kVA and up to 375 kVA. You still pay the Railway Development Levy at 2 percent of CIF, a Customs Processing Fee at 0.6 percent of the FOB value, and VAT at 18 percent charged on the customs value plus duty plus those charges. Together that is about 21 percent of CIF, and none of it is customs duty.

What import duty and tax do you pay on a diesel generator into Kenya?

Import duty on a diesel generating set into Kenya is zero. Under the East African Community Common External Tariff, every subheading of HS 8502 carries a 0 percent rate, including 8502.12.00, which covers sets above 75 kVA and up to 375 kVA. You still pay the Import Declaration Fee at 2.5 percent, the Railway Development Levy at 2 percent and VAT at 16 percent, which together come to about 21.2 percent of the CIF value. None of that 21.2 percent is customs duty.
